8 Green Team initiatives to improve sustainability in the workplace

8 Green Team initiatives to improve sustainability in the workplace

Across the globe, our employee-led Green Teams are making smart, practical changes to reduce waste, rethink resources, and create more sustainable offices.

Here are just a few highlights from recent efforts:

Eliminating plastic tea bags

Zurich

A plastic audit revealed that individually wrapped teabags were still in use. The Green Team tested new options, proposed a switch, and worked with office management to change suppliers. The result: recyclable packaging, organic tea, and one less source of single-use plastic for nearly 1,000 employees.

Exploring local circular design

Panama City

The team visited Clandestino, a studio turning plastic waste into art and furniture. It was a powerful look at the potential of circular economy solutions in the local community.

Hosting a clothing swap

Boston

Students and staff at Hult International Business School donate clothes during Earth Week for a free swap event. Anything left is donated to Second Chances. It’s a favorite tradition and has kept over 1,500 lbs of clothing out of landfills.

Launching composting

Austin

The team made the case for composting, secured budget approval, and launched the service during Earth Month with a staff workshop. Since then, compostable materials have become the norm at events and in daily office life.

Planning office events with no waste

Malta

Employees carved pumpkins during a Halloween office event, and no part went to waste. The pumpkin flesh was used to bake cakes shared within the office. The seeds were roasted into a healthy snack, and the shells were used as natural fertilizer to support reforestation efforts. The team has also organized an office swap event for clothing, books, home goods, and given metal water bottles to staff. After submitting their initiatives to the EU-backed EWWR platform, the Malta team was nominated for an award by WasteServ Malta.

Replacing lamination with reusable pouches

London

Instead of laminating posters, the Hult International Business School Post Graduate team introduced reusable magnetic pouches. The change cuts down on plastic waste and energy use and make communication look even better.

Organizing a river cleanup

Denver

In November, the Green Team hosted a Platte River cleanup near the office, where 25 employees collected 6 bags of trash. This recurring event is a great way to give back to the community near the office.

Improving signage

Boston

New signage was created to make it easier to sort waste and reduce contamination. Better awareness means more impact.
