Tips to prepare for an interview
An interview is your chance to better understand the company and role you are applying for, show why your skills and interests align with the position, and ask questions. Preparing for an interview can be a daunting task, but with the help of these tips from EF Education First’s Recruitment and Employee Development team (we call them RED), you can leave a lasting impression.
Research the specific role and company
“When applying to a new position, it is important to do your research prior to the interviews. It's essential to not only familiarize yourself with the company, but also gain a comprehensive understanding of the specific role you are applying for. If your interviewer provides you with any resources prior to your call, read them in advance so you can feel as prepared as possible.”
—Stephanie, Recruiting Coordinator, EF Denver Office
Make sure you’re passionate about the position, company, and mission
“When applying to a specific job, make sure you are excited about the role itself—not just the company and the mission. Picture yourself performing the day-to-day tasks listed in the job description, to ensure that it fits your skillset and is something you enjoy.”
—Alex, Recruiter, EF Boston Office
Pay attention to detail and revise your resume
“A little bit of attention goes a long way! Read thoroughly through the job application before applying, taking note of application deadlines, start dates, and whether the role is remote, hybrid or fully in office. Pay attention to your resume too! Do a final review before submitting and make sure there are no spelling errors. Sometimes the headings will be for a different role you applied for with another company; make sure it's relevant to that specific role and proofread.”
—Isabella, Associate Director of People, EF Denver Office
Be ready to share detailed examples
“When you’re preparing for an interview, be ready to share detailed examples! Think about appropriate scenarios you've encountered that demonstrate the skill your interviewer is asking about. Explain what the situation was, what actions you personally took/what role you played, and what the positive outcome was as a result!”
—Monica, Campus & Early Talent Recruiter, EF Boston Office
Come up with questions ahead of time
“Think about a few questions ahead of time about the company, the role or the interviewer. Have a few so that you do not run out during the interview! This shows interest to the interviewer and you get answers to your specific questions. Look at EF's Core Values—they are important to us, are they important to you?”
—Lydia, Director of Marketing and Content, EF London Office
Show who you are outside of your professional experience and skill set
“We love seeing candidates enjoy the conversation and want to hear who you are as a person, so think about how you (or friends and family) would describe yourself, besides focusing on your skillset and professional experience. What motivates you in life? What are you looking for in a role/company? Anything that can help us understand who you are as a person is of great interest!”
—Fiona, Director of Global RED, EF Zurich Office
Tell us about your global perspective
“EF is a global organization with presence in more than 50 countries. Demonstrate your global perspective by sharing your engagement with different cultures. Whether through travel, work, or study, provide examples that showcase you can navigate and thrive in multicultural environments.”
—Cristina, Director of Learning and Development, EF Zurich Office
Have a growth mindset
“When applying to EF, a good tip is to be open minded and think about examples in the past where you have shown flexibility and willingness to embrace change. We look for people with a growth mindset that are curious both in their personal and professional life.”
—Sara, Senior Vice President, EF Zurich Office
